The short comic I worked on with writer Juan-Manuel Rocha has finally been printed, and was premiered at the launch of Comics on Comics at the Improv.

There are some copies at The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach, soon to be had at other locations.

Hello,

I am finally changing out of the interim format for the site after my wordpress crash a few weeks go, but it will take me just a little while to get the gallery stuff back up. In the meantime, my blog is still intact, and I have a lot of work posted there. Hopefully all sorted soon!

Plein Air at Travel Town

It’s still early days for me as a plein air painter, and I have a LOT to learn, but I really enjoyed this trip to Travel Town at Griffith Park. I’ve taken my sketchbook there, but this was first time painting, and it was great. I plan to try on a weekly basis, there are endless subjects in a small area.

These are both 6×8; I was able to take a bit longer on the first piece, but I had to rush a bit on the second. I look forward to trying to paint that train again, though; they all have their own little personalities!

Ballpoints

I don’t draw much with ballpoint; in the past, I always thought of the gloopy, Bic pens that I never even wanted to write with. But having used a few new ones, I can really see why other people love them. I really love india ink, but a good ballpoint is a close second!

These are some pieces from 1920s ads, magazines, Brassai, and the Mark Simon book many will instantly recognize.

Emergency! caricature sketches. Normally I have made sketches from Dragnet (see this post), but I find Emergency! just as inspiring, and I am sure it won’t be long before I am on to Adam 12. What is it about Jack Webb’s oeuvre that I find so compelling?

As I mentioned in the last post, I was about to post my 5 minute sketches of the amazing Stacey E. Walker from one workshop, when I got the chance to paint her yesterday in another. There really wasn’t time to do one finished piece, so I did two; the first is 9×12, the other is a more abstract 5×7.

I was on the point of adding these life drawings from a little while ago of the fabulous Stacey E. Walker, when we had her as a model for life painting yesterday. It’s always an honor to work from a model who has sat for greats like Simon Bisley, but it makes sharing the results a tad intimidating, if not downright embarrassing.

These are from a little while back, so I can’t remember exactly, but I believe they were five minute poses.
